Sarbjit Singh (Randeep Hooda) lives in a village near Punjab with his wife Sukhpreet (Richa Chadha), sister Dalbir Kaur (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) and father. He also has two daughters Poonam Kaur (Ankita Shrivastav) and Swapandeep Kaur. He was a farmer who worked in others farm and earn livelihood. One day he gets arrested by Pakistani army for crossing the border unknowingly. He is tortured in the Pakistani jail to death and convicted as Indian Spy and named as the person behind bomb blasts in Lahore city of Pakistan. He is alleged as Manjit Singh in Pakistan who is the main culprit behind the blasts.

Sarbjit’s sister Dalbir fought with the Pakistani Government for nearly 23 years before Sarbjit being declared as innocent. Sarbjit’s case is fought by Awais Sheikh (Darshan Kumaar). He with the help of Dalbir tries to find a way to prove Sarbjit innocent and catch the real culprit Manjit Kaur. But after Sarbjit being declared innocent given bail, he gets attacked in the jail where he gets badly injured and is hospitalized. On 2nd May, 2013 he took his last breathe.

Sarabjit Singh (also spelled Sarabjeet Singh; 1963 or 1964 – 2 May 2013[2]) (alleged to be Manjit Singh by Pakistan[1][3][4]) was an Indian national convicted of terrorism and spying by a Pakistani court.[5][6] He was tried and convicted by the Supreme Court of Pakistan for a series of bomb attacks in Lahore and Faisalabad that killed 14 bystanders in 1990.[7] Sarabjit claimed he was a farmer who strayed into Pakistan from his village located on the border, three months after the bombings.[8][9] According to unconfirmed Indian sources, Singh had been a spy for the Indian Research and Analysis Wing intelligence agency and had been working undercover in Pakistan.[10][11]

After a brief trial in the Lahore High Court (later directed to the Supreme Court), he was condemned and sentenced to death in 1991, but the sentence was repeatedly postponed by the Government of Pakistan.[12] While in prison at Kot Lakhpat Jail, Lahore in April 2013, he was attacked by fellow inmates and died six days later at Jinnah Hospital, Lahore.

A biographical film Sarabjit on him is being produced by Indian filmmaker Subhash Ghai and directed by Omung Kumar. Actress Aishwarya Rai will play the role of Singhs sister, Dalbir Kaur, while, Randeep Hooda and Richa Chada will essay the role of Sarbjit Singh and his wife, Sukhpreet, respectively.[13][14][15] The film will be narrated through the perspective of Sarbjit Singh's sister Dalbir Kaur and is scheduled for 20 May 2016 release in India, though, Censor board of Pakistan has banned the film for being"anti-Pakistani".[16]
