The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) has launched its second full high-definition (HD) network that broadcasts sports programs and events for viewers in Iran.


The over-the-air digital channel, named IRIB Varzesh, went on air with a limited broadcast on Saturday. The television network is expected to be officially launched in late April, according to reports.

The new channel aims to improve physical activity and fitness in the country, increase Iranian women and girls’ participation in a wide variety of sports, and develop health culture in the Iranian society, given that the Islamic Republic is among the youngest countries around the globe.

The channel also seeks to provide the audience with information on sports, and give them advice on how to practice certain exercises.

IRIB Varzesh enjoys Full HD television display technology that surpasses the video quality and sharpness of the original high-definition television technology, providing an image resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels.

The original HDTV technology offers vertical resolution that ranges from 720 lines with progressive scanning (720p) to 1080 lines with interlaced scanning (1080i). Full HDTV provides 1080 lines with progressive scanning (sometimes referred to as 1080p).

A digital-to-analogue converter box is required to watch IRIB Varzesh television channel on analogue TVs.

The channel will soon be received on Badr satellite, frequency: 11881 MHz, horizontal position, symbol rate: 27500, FEC ¾, and a full HD receiver is needed to receive the channel.

Iran's first full HD channel, Hispan TV, was officially launched on December 21, 2011. The Spanish-language channel broadcasts a wide range of news, educational, and scientific programs.
