Lukaku keeps Toffees alive

Post by sake »

A review of Tuesday's action in the FA Cup as Romelu Lukaku's late strike earned a 1-1 draw against West Ham.

Everton striker Romelu Lukaku's added-time equaliser in the FA Cup tie against West Ham eased some of the mounting pressure on his manager Roberto Martinez.

The Belgium striker's smart turn and finish - his fourth goal in as many matches for the Toffees against the Hammers - earned a 1-1 draw and at the very least postponed another inquest into what is going wrong at Goodison Park.

Lukaku's first in seven matches ended a four-game losing streak and ensured they live to fight another day in the competition after James Collins' 56th-minute header had exposed the Toffees' defensive Achilles heel - only QPR have conceded more in the Premier League this season.

In the night's other fixture, Chesterfield fought back from a 2-0 half-time deficit to force a 2-2 draw and a replay against Scunthorpe.

Alex Davey fired Scunthorpe in front after 18 minutes with his first goal in senior football and they made it 2-0 in the 44th minute as striker Lyle Taylor capitalised on a defensive blunder to race through the middle and slam his shot past keeper Tommy Lee.

Chesterfield pulled a goal back in the 70th minute when Eoin Doyle reduced the arrears from the penalty spot after Gary Roberts had been upended.

They equalised five minutes from time when substitute Jay O'Shea applied the finishing touch to a ball into a crowded box from Gary Roberts.
