Sky Deutschland to close down 3D channel

Post by Umair Malik »

German pay-TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland will close down its 3D channel Sky 3D in mid-2017.

“We continuously watch and analyse the market with the target of optimising our offer in the interest of our customers. The trend and also customers’ interest clearly tends towards Ultra HD,” a Sky Deutschland spokesman told Broadband TV News.

“For this reason, we have decided to discontinue linear channel Sky 3D in mid-2017 and instead to increasingly invest into offers in the new Ultra HD technology,” said the spokesman. “In this context, Sky launches today with Sky+ Pro and an Ultra HD offer a new and very attractive entertainment proposition in the market.”

sky-3dOn video-on-demand (VOD) service Sky Select, 3D (mv) will continue to be made available, according to the spokesman.

Sky 3D launched on October 3, 2010 via cable and satellite. The programme line-up comprises live sports including the Bundesliga and golf tournaments, (mv), documentaries and music concerts.

In the UK, Sky terminated its 3D channel in June 2015 and transferred the 3D (MOVIE) selection to its VOD service.
