How to convert non-Linux receivers to Linux receivers

I am interested to and looking for different methods available to convert or upgrade both non-Linux/Linux receivers other but better than the previous models. I invite all forum members to contribute whatever knowledge/Source they have, here, to make this topic worthwhile for everyone.

First of all u should have knowledge what is linux and what in non linux .
Linux is an open source environment Which is used and designed for specific class.
The Google Search is the best bet
