According to a new report by Gartner, Android has finally managed to overtake Apple’s iOS to become the largest operating system of tablets.
About 61.9% of the 195 million tablets sold worldwide last year ran on Google’s platform.
Its market share stands at 45.8 percent. Apple, meanwhile, slipped from 52.8 to 36 percent but still managed to increase sales by 9 million. Microsoft’s Windows-running tablets saw a slight boost to 2.1 percent,
The iPad remained the leader when it came to manufacturer’s market share, capturing almost twice as many sales as the second-placed Samsung, whose sales stood at 37.4 million. Samsung’s share did increase the most, though, with a mind-blowing 336 percent increase in sales year-on-year.
ASUS, which makes the popular Nexus 7 and Transformer tablets came next at 5.6 percent while Amazon with its Kindle Fire tablets was placed fourth.
Just like in the smartphone market, Lenovo is rising in the tablet arena too, managing to capture the fifth spot with 3.3 percent of the market share and seeing a stunning 198 percent increase over the past one year. Whether it will be as popular outside China remains to be seen.
