Celtic edge to victory

Post by sake »

A review of Saturday's action in the Scottish Premiership.

Goals from Anthony Stokes and John Guidetti helped Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic to a 2-1 win over Dundee - but not before another anxious finale at Parkhead.

Paul Hartley's enterprising side were a match for their hosts in the first half but fell behind a minute before the interval when Stokes headed in a Kris Commons free-kick.

When fellow striker Guidetti scored his 10th goal since arriving on loan from Manchester City in the 54th minute it looked like the home side would cruise to three points.

However, four minutes later Dundee striker David Clarkson reduced the deficit, scoring in a seventh successive game for the Taysiders to equal the Dees record set by Alan Gilzean in 1964.

The anxiety emanating from the stands did not help the Hoops in the closing stages of the game - although they were not put under any severe pressure by the Taysiders.

Inverness remain level on points with Celtic at the top after defeating Motherwell 3-1 at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium.

The home side had taken the lead in the 29th minute when Billy McKay ran clear of the Motherwell defence, but the managerless Steelmen levelled just two minutes later through Henrik Ojamaa.

Caley Thistle displayed more of the qualities that see them share top spot in the second half as they went back ahead through Marley Watkins’ close-range header on 70 minutes before Josh Meekings secured the points eight minutes later as he slid in to meet a corner-kick at the back post.

Dundee United returned to winning ways in the Scottish Premiership as they saw off struggling Kilmarnock 3-1 at Tannadice to stay third.

Jackie McNamara's side made up for their 1-0 defeat away to Motherwell before the international break by overcoming Allan Johnston's side thanks to goals in the first half from Nadir Ciftci and Stuart Armstrong, before substitute Aidan Connolly sealed matters in stoppage time.

Manual Pascali equalised briefly for Killie in 38 minutes - but Armstrong put the hosts back ahead three minutes before the interval prior to Connolly's late strike, which subjected the visitors to their fourth straight defeat.

St Mirren slumped to their fourth defeat in five games as a dismal display saw them lose 3-0 at Hamilton - a result which increases the pressure on manager Tommy Craig.

Tony Andreu gave the home side the lead just before half-time and Mickael Antoine-Curier doubled the lead midway through the second half.

Ali Crawford added a third soon after to wrap up a deserved three points.

St Johnstone clung on for a 2-1 victory over bottom side Ross County to make it a hat-trick of games without defeat.

A first-half opener from the excellent James McFadden deservedly gave the McDiarmid Park side the upper hand at half-time.

It was an advantage they doubled after the interval when Michael O'Halloran made up for an incredible point-blank miss by rifling home.

Jake Jervis pulled one back immediately for the Highlanders, who pressed strongly in search of an equaliser, but time was against them and the hosts held on.
